Modesta Marceline Green

Modesta Marceline Green, the daughter of Peter and Anna Ohlinger Leinen, was born June 28, 1915 in Portsmouth, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Portsmouth, where she received her education, graduating from Portsmouth High School. Modesta married Claude Green on January 25, 1937 in Harlan, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Harlan, where she worked for several years as a secretary for a rendering company. In 1954, they moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Mission Group, the V.F.W., the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer at Longhouse Residence, RSVP and the Spencer Senior Center. Modesta was a co-chairman of the Clay County Easter Seal Foundation, was Citizen of The Year in 1975, and was a member of the National AARP and the Central N.W. Iowa AARP Chapter #3365. She also enjoyed gardening and fishing in her spare time. Modesta passed away at Spencer Hospital on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the age of 91. Her parents; her husband, Claude on December 21, 1989; 12 sisters and brothers; 7 half sisters and brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Karen; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Clara; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. God saw she was getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around her and whispered "come with me." With tearful eyes we watched her suffer, and saw her fade away. And tho' we loved her dearly, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands to rest; God broke our hearts to show us, He only takes the best.
