Neil Boyce Scoles Jr., son of Neil Boyce and Lydia Millsap Scoles Sr. was born February 1, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout his school years Neil and his family moved many times because of his father's work. Neil attended schools in Des Moines, Cincinnati, Ohio, LaGrange, Illinois, Williams, Ia., Watertown, S.D., Menomonie, Wisconsin, Albert City, and Rockwell City, Iowa. Neil graduated from Rockwell City High School where he was valedictorian of his class and editor of the annual and newspaper. He lettered in 4 sports, receiving the honor of athlete of the week in the Des Moines Register in football. Neil spent his freshman year of college at Drake University. The next year he worked on the newspaper in Rockwell City. In 1940 he enrolled at Iowa State University. It was there in 1942 that he met his wife to be, Beverly Metcalf.
Neil was drafted into the service in 1942. He spent 3 years serving in North Africa and Italy. Neil and Bev corresponded those 3 years and when he was discharged in September 1945, they were married 2 weeks later on September 16th. Neil and Bev moved to Ames where Neil finished his degree in Ag Economics. Following graduation in 1947, Neil worked with his father in the small loan and income tax business. In 1947 Neil and Bev moved 3 miles north of Dickens to Bev's former home and began farming with Bev's father and brother.
Neil farmed for over 50 years, feeding cattle, chickens, hogs and raising corn and soybeans. Neil also had several outside jobs. He served as a Clay Mutual Insurance agent, Lake Township assessor, secretary of the Lake Center School board, president of the Dickens Coop Elevator board, Sunday school teacher, lay leader as well as many other positions in the United Methodist Church at Dickens. Neil was elected to the Clay County board of supervisors in 1972 and served 12 years. As a representative from the board of supervisors, he served on the Board of Health, Council on Aging, ADTU board, sanitary landfill board and many others.
After retirement Neil and Bev wintered for 16 years in Apache Junction, Arizona. After many years of hard work, Neil got to enjoy playing pool, bridge and golf in Arizona. He also played bridge and pool at the Spencer Area Senior Center where he had been instrumental in procuring a place for senior citizens to meet. Neil also enjoyed attending the Golden K Kiwanis and working at the Golden K stand at the fair. He also drove the tractor for the Golden K shuttle at the fair.
Neil loved spending time with his family. He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed entertaining the family when they came to visit in Arizona at Christmas time.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, and brother-in-law Don Johnson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years Beverly, daughters Sherry {Jerry} Groenewold of Spencer, Cindy {Bill} Booe of Hinton, grandsons Michael {Emilie} Groenewold of Chanhasssen, Minnesota, Matthew Groenewold of Lawrence, Kansas, Anthony {Lori} Ticknor of Bloomington, Minnesota, Traci Booe of McCook Lake, SD, and 3 great grandchildren: August, Hudson, and Zoey. Also surviving are sisters Pat {Art} Downard of Webster City, Iowa, Helen Johnson of Amarillo, Texas, Beth Coogan of Ankeny, brother Dan {Sue} Scoles of Ames, step mother Mildred Scoles of Webster City, Iowa, other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Spencer.
There will be a Military Flag Presentation following the service at the church, conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 of Spencer.
