Neil Joseph Petersen

Born on August 25, 1956 in Hartley, Iowa, Neil joined his parents in heaven on May 20, 2023.

He was the fourth child born to Ray and Darlene Petersen of Sutherland, Iowa.

Neil’s life wasn’t easy due to a number of health issues but he was a happy, special guy.

He was the longest reigning resident of Mid Steps Park View homes in Sioux City being the ruler of House One for 36 years. He touched a lot of lives in those years. He loved working at the Mid Steps Impressions Print Shop and was the highest earning employee. He was a very good worker and took great pride in having a job and the independence of having his own money and checkbook.

Neil loved his family with every part of his big heart. He loved puppies and horses, the Hawkeyes and even the Huskers. He loved dessert, pie, ice cream, cake, and all the sweets. To Neil, there was nothing better than a can of “pop!”

Neil was a bit bossy at times and he was a protector of those he loved, especially the staff members who were like family to him.

Neil enjoyed spending hours making picture collages, so no magazine was safe from his scissors and glue. The door to his room was an ongoing work of art and a contention for staff and the Fire Marshall.

He loved going to events like rodeos and concerts. He loved Dolly Parton and wished forever to go to Dollywood. He enjoyed his birthday and Christmas outings with his sisters and brother and he worshiped the opportunities to “go out to eat.”

Neil was a multi-year Special Olympian and a strong, proud competitor. His most recent competition qualified him for the 2023 Iowa State Special Olympics.

His teasing sense of humor made him quite the ladies’ man! He was a true charmer. Neil gave the best hugs and he was always forgiving.

Neil missed his Mom and Dad greatly and loved to reminisce about them at each visit.

He is survived by his siblings, Kay (Art) Schueneman; Jerry (Cindy) Petersen; Theresa (Tom) Hildreth; Julie (Lee) Meth and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Memorial to celebrate and remember the life of Neil Petersen will be held Saturday, May 27 at Park View Homes at 2815 Lincoln Way, Sioux City in Building 1, Come & Go from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

Burial of cremains and with graveside service on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 4:00 pm at Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, Iowa.
