Niles William Swancutt was born at home on a farm near Riceville, Iowa on June 17, 1929 to Elby & Mary (Greeley) Swancutt. He attended rural schools through 8th grade and quit school in his freshman year to help out on the family farm when his father became ill. He enlisted in the Army on August 11, 1955 and served in Korea until being honorably discharged on May 24th 1957.
On returning home, he married Patricia Letscher of Pocahontas, IA on June 17th, 1957 in Pocahontas. They lived several different places in the first 12 years of their marriage with Niles working for several different farmers as a farmhand. In August of 1969, they moved to Spencer, Iowa and Niles worked at several jobs including Witco, Iowa Veneer Plant, Van Ladder and National Spencer for 14 years before retiring on January 24th, 2002. He joined First Christian Church in August of 1973 and served as Sunday school secretary for 20 years. He also served as Deacon over the years. Niles loved working outdoors, raising his vegetable gardens and planting and tending his beautiful flowers every summer. He also enjoyed fishing and pitching horseshoes with his brother. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
Niles passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Lois O’Hara & Donna Swancutt; two brothers, Charles and Maynard Swancutt; one granddaughter, Janelle Polson and one grandson, Kevin Niles Rohmiller.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; 3 sons: Kevin Swancutt, Keith (Karen) Swancutt, and Kelly Swancutt all of Spencer; three daughters: Marianne (Kelvin) Puck of Durant, IA, Sherri Webster of Spencer and Lisa (Donald) Scott of Greenville, IA; one brother: Neldon (Della) of Elma, IA; one sister, Shirley of Elma, IA; 16 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
