Norma was born March 5, 1940 to John and Christine (Norris) Whited in Rockwell, Tennessee, and that is where her love of country music started. Her family eventually moved to California and Norma sang in the choir at the Chula Vista Baptist Church. This is where she met and eventually married the young Navy sailor, Robert ‘Bob’ Carlson. Bob and Norma married on March 25, 1960. They moved with the Navy and lived in California, Virginia and eventually moved to Spencer, Iowa. Norma worked over 20 years at Spencer Municipal Hospital when she retired in 2002.
Norma and Bob spent many vacations camping with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, she loved spending time with family. There were many competitive board games played between her and the grandchildren. She was also a big football fan and was the only one ‘allowed’ to have two teams, the Titans and the Forty-Niners.
Norma passed away at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Friday, November 27, 2020, at the age of 80. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert ‘Bobby’ Carlson, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Robert L. Carlson; two daughters: Chris Bray (Paul) and Lisa Dunwoody (Matt); brother, Bill Whited (Vicky); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma is, and was the sweetest, kindest and most caring wife, mom, sister, grandmother and friend you could have. She loved her family and extended family with all her heart.
