Norma Galbraith

November 26, 1913 — January 18, 2015

Norma (Scott) Galbraith, age 101, passed away on January 18, 2015 at The Ruthven Community Care Center. A family service will be held at Warner Funeral Home, followed by interment at North Lawn Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickens Methodist Church. Norma, the daughter of Everett and Louise (Miller) Scott and sister to Murray Everett Scott, was born November 26, 1913 on a farm 3 1/2 miles NE of Dickens, IA. She attended school at Dickens, Lake Center and Spencer, graduating from Dickens in 1931. Norma married Bernard (Bud) Galbraith on Feb. 27, 1940 in Spirit Lake, IA. They were married 66 years. They farmed 2 1/2 miles North of Dickens, retiring in 1979 to a home on Lake Minnewashta, near Arnolds Park, IA. She resided at Riverview Terrace Assisted Living in Spencer, IA from 2006-2014 after the death of her husband, Bernard, and was transferred to Ruthven Community Care Center after suffering from a stroke in July, 2014 at the age of 100. Growing up Norma loved riding horses, reading, running and anything outdoors. As an adult, she continued her love of horses, as well as birds, and ' the farm.' She was an avid reader and excelled in sewing and cooking, but her favorite pastime was always her children and grandchildren. Norma was a proud hard working farm wife who was passionately devoted to her family of four children. She worked tirelessly on the farm cooking, sewing, tending huge gardens, and chauffeuring her children to their many and varied activities. In later years, the love of cheering their children on was also transferred to their 8 grandchildren's many interests. Norma was a long time member of The Dickens United Methodist Church where she was active in Women's Society, taught Sunday School, and helped serve a multitude of church suppers and funeral lunches. She was always willing to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor whenever needed. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, one infant son, Bernard Rodney and her husband Bernard. Those left to cherish her memory are her four children: Sharyl Potratz (Dave) of Spencer, IA, Kevin Galbraith (Diana) of Paoli, PA; Nicky Berge (Don) of Clear Lake, IA; Stan Galbraith (Gail) of Fort Dodge, IA, 8 grandchildren: Tamara Summers, Bradley Lynch, Rodney Potratz, Shannon Berge, Kendra Holtkamp, Keevin Galbraith, Nicky Keller, Aaron Galbraith, 16 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Norma enjoyed frequent visits and loving support from nieces Yolunda and Kim.
