Odelo “Woody” Schlichte, the son of Joseph and Susan “Cora” (Penning) Schlichte, was born October 23, 1934 on a farm near Granville, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Granville, where he received his education at Granville St. Joseph School. After his schooling since he was 17 years of age, Woody drove a truck.
Woody married Verna Meyer on May 5, 1955 in Granville. After their marriage, they lived in various communities in Northwest Iowa, until moving to Everly, where he was a truck driver for the Farmer’s Coop for 29 years until his retirement. Woody was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Everly until it’s closing, where he became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Throughout his life, Woody was a active member of his church, serving with the Knights of Columbus for many years. He also enjoyed motorcycling, hunting, dancing collecting toy tractors and bowling. He especially enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Hawkeyes on TV. Woody was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Moose Riders Motorcycle Club.
He passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at the age of 83. Woody was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sherry Schlichte; two brothers: Pat and Gregory Schlichte; a brother-in-law, Darrell Berkenpas and his sister-in-law, Alice.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Verna of Everly; one son, Scott Schlichte and his wife, Monica of Everly, IA; four grandchildren: Susan, Amber, Renee and Scott; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers: Clifford (Delores) Schlichte of Granville, IA, Bernard (Elaine) Schlichte of Dovray, MN, Lorraine (Darrell) Berkenpas of Lemars, IA, Charlotte (Danny) Hoag of Kansas, Ruthann (Bob) Hoffman of Archer, IA and Mary Jo (Ron) Olsen of LeMars, IA; other relatives and many friends.
