Oliver Oscar Vogt, the son of Oscar and Eleanor Blaue Vogt, was born March 13, 1924 in Gerald, MO. At the age of 5, his family moved to Iowa where Ollie received his early education in country schools and later graduated from Calumet High School. He continued his education at Buena Vista College where he served as President of the Letterman’s Club. Ollie played on both high school and college baseball teams and later Semi Pro league at Marshall, MN. Ollie entered the U.S. Navy serving during WW II from 1942 until his Honorable Discharge in 1945.
Ollie married Louise Steffens on August 29, 1948 in Primghar, Iowa. Following their marriage, Ollie taught Jr. High Math for 37 years and the last 31 years at Spencer Junior High School. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer and also the American Legion. During his teaching career and following in his retirement, Ollie coached and officiated at sporting events. He also worked at the Clay County Fair for over 50 years. In his spare time, Ollie enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.
He passed away at the Spencer Hospital on December 29, 2017 at the age of 93. He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Karen Hine; daughter-in-law, Janet Vogt; brother, Laurence Vogt; two sisters, Ardine Schmidt and Erma Spada.
Ollie is survived by his wife, Louise of Spencer; two sons: Ronald (Janie) Vogt of Manchester, IA and Michael (Lee) Vogt of Lake City, IA; son-in-law, Gary Hine of Naples, FL; 4 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
