Opal Adeline Kaiser, daughter of Fred and Verna (Gallagher) Haye, was born on Sept. 7, 1912, on a farm northeast of Sutherland. She attended country school and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1930. Following her graduation, she taught country school for several years. During this time she was also employed by Lage's Drug Store and the Security State Bank in Sutherland.
Opal married Henry (Hine) Kaiser on February 14, 1938, in LeMars, Iowa. After their marriage, Opal followed Hine while he was in the military, and worked as a secretary at Army bases. After Hine completed his military service, they returned to Sutherland and owned and operated Kaiser's Hardware Store for many years. Their son, Joe, was born in 1951. In 1960, Opal began working as a secretary to the superintendent of Sutherland Community School. After selling the hardware store, and though they kept their home in Sutherland, Hine and Opal managed Dog 'N Suds drive-in restaurants in Marshalltown, Iowa and Oregon, Illinois. Opal then returned to employment at the Sutherland Community School as the secretary to the high school principal and continued in that position until her retirement in 1984. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Sutherland and Sanborn, and a 61 year member of the Sutherland American Legion Auxiliary. Opal loved to knit, garden, and to take care of her flowers and large lawn. She also liked to travel, spending several winters in California and taking trips to the East Coast and Europe. Opal was an avid walker, walking everyday until the age of 93.
Opal has been at the Sutherland Care Center for the past two years where she passed away on November 6, 2007, at the age of 95.
