Opal Dubois

Opal LaVonne DuBois, the daughter of Freddie LeRoy and Mary Helen (Hubbard) Thompson was born on October 3, 1919, in Moorhead, IA. She received her early education there until her senior year when her family moved to Sioux Rapids, IA, where she graduated. After high school, Opal attended Buena Vista and Cedar Falls College where she obtained her teaching certificate. She then taught in rural country schools in the Clay County area. Opal married Donald DuBois on March 1, 1941, in Hawarden, IA. The early years of their marriage were spent in Sioux Rapids where they owned and operated the Soo Lockers. After moving to Spencer, Don owned and operated a gravel pit for several years. Upon moving to Spirit Lake, they owned and operated the Sand Bar Resort on Big Spirit Lake. The couple enjoyed being attendants at the Spencer Campgrounds for about 10 years together, and after Donald passed away in 1986, Opal continued to do it for another 10 years. Opal was a member of the Hope Reformed Church and was active with the Women of Hope. She liked to play cards, and was involved in the 500 Card club, she liked to read and played the piano in her younger years. Opal loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who were all a big part of her life. Opal passed away on February 11, 2010, at the Spencer Hospital, at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one great-granddaughter, Lily Gilderhus; two brothers: Ivan and Earl Thompson, and a sister, Avis Peacock. Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters: Donette Hanson of Spencer, IA, Lanette Kilpatrick and her husband, Kent of Spencer, IA, and Ronette DuBois of Sioux Falls, SD; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 15, at the Hope Reformed Church in Spencer.

Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 14, with the family present 2 - 5:00 P.M., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
