Opal Goldie Swanson, the daughter of Charles and Clemenstina Smith Simington, was born November 29, 1938 at the family home in Ruthven, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Ruthven where she received her early education and graduated from High School. While in school, Opal was a 4 year letter winner in basketball playing for the Ruthven Ramettes. She was also Homecoming Queen and awarded the Ruthven Citizenship Award.
Opal married James "Jim" Dale Swanson on October 1, 1956 in Sioux Falls, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in Spencer, where Opal worked at the Spencer Daily Reporter as the mailroom supervisor for over 30 years. Opal was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. In her spare time, Opal enjoyed sitting on her patio and she especially loved having her family over to visit.
Opal passed away at her home on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the age of 72. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim on August 23, 2006; daughter-in-law, Dawn Swanson; brothers: Dean, Chuck and Jim Simington.
She is survived by her four sons and their wives: Rod & Sandy Swanson of Brainerd, MN, Randy &Margie Swanson & their boys, Spencer, Brady, John and Adam, Chris & Lori Swanson & their children, Drake & Piper all of Spencer, Tim & Kelly Swanson & their children, Clayton & Raegen of Emmetsburg; three sisters: Cleo (Roy) Hauge of Milford, IA, JoAnn Kemp of Laurens, IA and Doris (Jerry) Anderson of Spencer; brother, Dan Simington of Creston, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the First English Lutheran Church.
