Orlyn Ray Wiemers

Orlyn Ray Wiemers, the son of Lot and Ragelina (Sonius) Wiemers, was born December 8, 1935, in Spencer, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Spencer where he received his early education in country schools in Summit Township, and later graduated from Spencer High School in 1953. He continued his education at South Dakota State, Iowa State and Mankato State University where he received his BA and Master Degrees in Education Administration. After his schooling, Orlyn served as Superintendent of Schools at Thompson and Manilla Schools in Iowa, and Walnut Grove and Minneota Schools in Minnesota for a total of 47 years. He married Maye Muller on February 19, 2000, in Ankeny, Iowa. In 2001, Orlyn retired and moved to Spencer where he was the Administrator at Estherville Christian School for two years. Following that, he worked part time at Del's Garden Center and Menards. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church near Spencer. During his years in Minneota, he was president of the Rotary club for one year. He enjoyed wood working, gardening and traveling in his spare time. Orlyn passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa, on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marilyn Quist; and two brothers, Harold and Edward Wiemers. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maye of Spencer; one son, Galyn and his wife, Toni of West Des Moines, IA; two daughters: Karla Ver Meer and her husband, Jim of Colorado Springs, CO, and Karen and her husband, Jim Guest of Chamberlain, SD; his stepchildren: Terri (Ron) Dunek of Ankeny, IA, Tammy (Gary) Muhlbauer of Manilla, IA, Tom (Christy) Mohr of Ray, ND, Tori (Brad) Rasmussen of Spencer; Troy (Karri) Mohr of Glenwood, IA, and Tim (Traci) Mohr of Sturgis, SD; 10 grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; one brother, Louis Wiemers of Spencer; one sister, Ardell Durst of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
