Orton Marcus Hanson, the son of Henry and Martha Nelson Hanson, was born December 3, 1917 in Brady, MT and raised in Polson, MT on the south shore of the Flathead Lake. Orton served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He was a tail gunner in a B24 aircraft and participated in a Search and Rescue Unit.
Orton met Margaret Selzer while he was working in California, they married on July 14, 1946 in Inglewood, CA. Following their marriage they moved to Iowa in 1947. Orton worked in the Ford Garage before taking the Civil Service test and joining the Post Office in 1948. He carried mail in Spencer until July 1980 when he retired.
He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 123 sponsored by Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. He was an avid scout leader, taking Wood Badge Training in the Buffalo Patrol, receiving his God and Country award and was presented the prestigious award, the Silver Beaver. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, woodcarving, chair caning and reading.
Orton passed away on February 1, 2010, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Spencer; his two daughters and their husbands: Lynn and Richard Harrison of Iowa City, IA and Laurel and Greg Anliker of Des Moines, IA; 2 sons and their wives: Michael and Kelly Hanson and Kent and Julie Hanson both of Spencer, IA; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
