Otis Robert Andrews was born April 13, 1921, to Otis R. and Rosella Shea Andrews at Carroll, IA. He received his early education in Carroll, attending St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Carroll High School.
He was employed by the State Conservation Commission before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, December 1941, as an Apprentice Seaman. He received Basic Training at Great Lakes, IL, and then 4 months training at Navy Radio School in Indianapolis, IN, graduating as 3rd Class Radioman. He spent the balance of his four years serving aboard the USS Chandeleur (Seaplane Tender), and the USS Springfield (Lt. Cruiser), and was discharged as Chief Radioman in December 1945.
He returned to Carroll joining the St. Clair Men's Clothing. In 1948, he married Helena Santillan, RN, and in 1954 he accepted a position with Eddie Quinn Clothier in Spencer, IA, where he served many years as Business Manager and assisted Eddie Quinn in opening stores in Storm Lake, Ames, Fort Dodge, Sun City, AZ, and La Jolla, CA. He spent 46 years at the Spencer Store, and when it was closed in January 2000, he joined the staff at U.S. Bank for three years until his retirement. During all these years, he always had 'high regards' for his customers and often referred to them as 'part of my family.' During many of the years, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving on committees when needed; Menswear Retail Association; American Legion serving as Adjutant and a member of the Firing Squad in Carroll; 3rd and 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus, and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving many years as head usher. He mostly enjoyed golfing, taking care of their home, fishing, hunting, and dancing, belonging to the LaDanza Dance Club for over 40 years.
Bob passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, January 15, 2010, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish is memory are his wife, Helena 'Sanny' Andrews of Spencer, IA; one brother, Wayne Andrews and wife, Bernice of Storm Lake, IA; 5 nieces and husbands: Barbara and Jerry Rathke of Homer Glen, IL, Jane and Gus Erickson of Bellevue, NE, Mary and Mick Polich of Dallas, TX, Patricia and Joe Zielinski of Prescott, AZ, and Amy and Dan Hurley of Denver, CO; and Foster Friends: Dr. Charles L. Railsback of Bloomington, IN, and William Railsback of Canyon Lake, TX.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.
There will be a military flag presentation following the mass at the church.
A Catholic Vigil Service will be held 7:00 P.M., Monday, January 18 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
There will be a 4th Degree Honor Guard at the chapel.
