Patricia Rose Johansen

Patricia Rose (Beemer) Johansen was born June 17, 1934, in Hampton, IA. She passed away at her home on March 6, 2007, in Spencer, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Vera Beemer of Hampton, IA; sister, Jean Webb of Escondido, CA; brother, Rex Beemer of St. Paul, MN, and her husband, Roy E. Johansen of Spencer, IA. Patricia had her first horse at the age of two years old and had two other horses while she grew up on a farm in Hampton, IA. She had a great love for horses and would ride her horse (Bud, Buster, or Babe) in the countryside singing as loud as she could. She was given a gift from God in having the ability to sing with a strong beautiful soprano voice which was appreciated by many music lovers, friends, family and also public performances. One of many public performances included singing a solo performance under the direction of Robert Shaw at a Concert Chorale when she lived in Independence, IA with her husband and children. She sang at Luther College under Wes Noble, the Director of Music at Decorah, IA. In today's society her talent could be compared to Sarah Brightman's talented soprano voice. During her high school years while growing up in Hampton, IA, she sang in Mixed Chorus 1,2,3,4; Officer 2; Girl's Chorus 1,2,3,4; Officer 4; Variety Show, Home Coming Queen Candidate 4; G.A.A. 1; Pep Squad 1,2,3,4; Junior Class Play (crew) 3; Cheerleader 1,2,3; All State Chorus 3,4; and Vocal Soloist 2,3,4. She was introduced to her husband, Roy E. Johansen on a blind date by a mutual friend, Maurice Wolf of Hampton, IA. They fell in love and married on November 21, 1954. They resided in Hampton, IA, after marrying and their first daughter, Julia Marie Johansen was born on September 18, 1955. They then moved to Iowa City while her husband attended college at the University of Iowa. Their second daughter, Teresa Lynn Johansen was born in Iowa City, IA, on January 8, 1958. Her husband, Roy, was very active in politics and served as the Vice President for the Young Democrats of Iowa. He inspired Patricia's political activism and both became very involved in campaigning for John F. Kennedy. After he won the election as President of the United States, they received a personal invitation to the Inaugural Ball. Patricia was a very avid Iowa Hawkeye fan along with her husband, Roy. They inspired their first and only grandson, Joshua W. Smith to the Iowa Hawkeye's and he still remains as much of a fan as they were. Her granddaughters are also Iowa Hawkeye fans. Later in Patricia's life she spoke a lot about the past and how different our Country was as to when she grew up. She always referred to it as the "Gentler Times", even though there was war and violence in those days, people lived simpler lives and family unity was very important. She had so many prayers and hopes that our Country would someday revert back to some of those gentler times she spoke of. She not only prayed for this for her own family but all families living during these very uncertain times. Patricia was a strong faith-filled woman who cared for many people tenderly throughout her entire life. Patricia is survived by two daughters: Julia Lineweaver and Cole, and Teresa Smith and Robert, all of Spencer, IA; four grandchildren: Joshua Smith and wife, Heidi of Milford, IA, Leslie Lineweaver of Spencer, IA, Emily Widen and Matt of Spencer, IA, Betsy Lineweaver and Luke Logan of Spencer, IA, and 10 great-grandchildren.
