Paul Richard Mathern

November 14, 1921 — July 9, 2006

Paul Richard Mathern, the son of Frank and Catherine (Betz) Mathern, was born on November 14, 1921, in La Feria, TX. The family moved to Gaza in 1922, where he received his early education and graduated from Gaza High School. On June 2, 1947 Paul married Christine Rahbusch in Sutherland at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Following their marriage, he farmed the home place with his brother, Carl in Gaza until 1993. He also spent 21 years as a member of the Gaza Fire Department. In 1993, Paul and Christine moved to Sutherland. They celebrated 59 years of marriage this past June. On Sunday, July 9, 2006, Paul passed away at the Sutherland Care Center at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Elizabeth Mathern, Ethel Clark and Inez DeWell and his brothers: Wilbur, Michael and Philip. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Christine; three sons: Richard and his wife, Janine of Eagan, MN, Steven of Marion, IA and Eugene and his wife Tina of Brandon, FL; one daughter, Pamela Hanson and her husband, Walt of Milford, IA; four grandchildren: Angela Hanson of Yankton, SD, Katie Jeffrey and her husband, Shawn of Spirit Lake, IA, Paul Mathern of Central City, IA and Kelsey Mathern of Brandon, FL; one brother, Carl of St. Paul, MN; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Services will be held at 10:30a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Sacred Hear Catholic Church in Sutherland, Iowa

VISITATION
Visitation will begin after 12noon on Wednesday with the family present from 6:00-8:00p.m., Wednesday eve. There will also be a Catholic Vigil service at 7:00p.m., Wed. eve. at the funeral home.
INTERMENT
Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Sutherland
