Pearl Louise Lyman

Hartley

Pearl Louise (Huston) Lyman, the daughter of Phil and Edna (Elliott) Huston, was born on June 18, 1920 in Hartley, IA. She attended school there and graduating from Hartley High School. After high school, she obtained her Teacher’s Training.

On May 12, 1945, Pearl married Harold Lyman in Luverne, MN.  Throughout Pearl’s life she taught in rural schools for 6 years and continued to teach her six children, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and five great/great grandchildren. She worked as a certified nursing assistant in the Hartley Hospital and Mann Memorial Wing. Pearl also was active in teaching the candy striper volunteers. She taught Sunday school and confirmation at the United Methodist Church. Pearl belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, Hartley American Legion Auxiliary Unit 288 and the Methodist Church Evening Circle.

Pearl had many hobbies like sewing, needlework, crocheting, gardening and houseplants. Pearl loved to travel when the opportunities arose. Pearl’s family and neighbors knew she had a great smile, a good ear and stopped what she was doing for a cup of coffee. Her secret to longevity; “stay busy, pray as you stitch and do your best.”

Pearl passed away on February 13, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family. She was 97. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters: Margery Stratman, Mary Byers and Reva Steinbeck; her brother, Will G Huston and her son-in-law, Glen Joens.

Left to cherish her memory are her six children: Nona Joens, Rita Lyman, Ruth Ann Brockmann, Bruce Lyman, Beth Weber (Vinson) and John Lyman; her grandchildren: Robert Joens, Amy Joens, Heidi Palmer (Greg) and Jesse Lyman; 6 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
