Phyllis Helen Oviatt, the daughter of P.E. and Helen (Sweeney) Fogarty, was born on February 4, 1938, in Lake Park, IA. She was raised in Northwest Iowa and attended school in Gillett Grove where she participated in six-on-six basketball and was a member of the All County Basketball Team. She graduated from high school in 1956.
On October 13, 1956, Phyllis was united in marriage to Dwain Oviatt in Ayrshire, IA. To this union, six children were born. They farmed for 8 years within Clay County and also owned and operated the Colonial Motel in Spencer for 7 years. Phyllis was a dedicated employee of the Spencer Municipal Hospital for over 30 years. Lifelong friendships were forged there as she cared for the people of the community. She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a testament to the power of faith and prayer.
Phyllis took great pride in her Irish heritage. She was devoted to her family and friends and took great pleasure in traveling with Dwain and visiting friends and relatives near and far. She especially enjoyed cheering her grandchildren and extended family on in their endeavors; whether it was ball games, RAGBRAI or all other activities. Phyllis had very strong family values and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the time with her precious grandchildren. Phyllis knew the important things in life-family, friends and Dairy Queen was always on the way home.
On Tuesday, June 19, 2007, Phyllis passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 69. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Philip; brothers: Joe and Tim Fogarty; brother-in-law, Delmer Oviatt; sister-in-law, Doris and her husband Myron Pierce; brothers-in-law: Don Elbert, Dick Dillard and Jim Finneman.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Dwain Oviatt of Spencer, IA; their five children: Pat and wife, Cindy Oviatt of Spencer, IA; Dennis Oviatt of Longmont, CO; Kevin Oviatt of Spencer; Sheila and husband, David Stoeckel of Forest City, IA; Nyra and husband, Jerry Sondag of Persia, IA; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 9 brothers and sisters, countless family and many, many friends.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.

VISITATION
Visitation will begin after 5:00 p.m., Thursday and will continue all day on Friday with the family present from 5:00 - 9:00p.m., Friday evening at the funeral home. Their will be a vigil service at 6:00 p.m., Friday evening at the funeral home.
