Phyllis Rae Bates, the daughter of Leslie and Helen (Popanz) Johnson, was born March 3, 1935, in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer where she received her education, graduating from Spencer High School. She later attended Buena Vista College for ½ year.
Phyllis married Glen Bates on July 24, 1956, in Benson, Arizona. After their marriage, they lived in Benson and Phoenix, Arizona, Spencer, Terril, the Lakes area and finally moved back to Spencer in 1962. She was a past member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer and current member of the Faith Pentecostal Church in Spencer. She worked as a Head Start volunteer and was a member of the Eagle’s, Moose and VFW Auxiliary. Phyllis loved to write poems and make arts and crafts.
She passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa, on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the age of 86. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Glen in 1979.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Timothy Bates and wife, Barbara of Spencer, IA; two stepdaughters, Mary and Gale; one stepson, Robert; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her siblings: Robert Johnson, Marilyn Zellaha, Shy Pearson, and Mary Nuovo; and other relatives and friends.
