Rachel Adelaide Forbes, the daughter of Nels P. and Annie C. Nelson Sorenson, was born June 24, 1910 in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Meadow Township near Spencer, where she received her early education in country schools and later graduated from Spencer High School. She later attended and graduated from the University of Iowa with a BS Degree in Teaching.
Rachel married Algenon "A.W." Forbes on September 1, 1944 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they moved to the family farm near Harris, where they made their home. She also taught for 35 years in the schools in Alexandria, MN, Marcus, Cylinder, Harris and Arnolds Park, until her retirement in May of 1975. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rachel was also active in the General Federation of Women's Clubs and was a 50-year member and Past Matron of the New Gloaming Chapter of Milford. She was a member of the Chi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a charter member of the Iowa Great Lakes Professional Women and the Association of University Women.
Rachel passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Friday, February 9, 2007 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Bernice and her husband, Algenon.
She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Cymbelene Forbes of Fort Myers, Florida; other relatives and friends.
