Ralph E. Nelson

Ralph E. Nelson, the son of Edward and Selma Grans Nelson, was born August 20, 1925, in Spencer, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Peterson, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Peterson High School. Ralph married Evelyn Hall on May 21, 1950, in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Peterson area. To this union, two children, Edward Ralph and Sherry Lucille, were born. Evelyn and Ralph retired from farming in 1987 and moved into their home in Peterson. Ralph was a member of the United Methodist Church in Peterson where he was active with the choir. He was a Clay County Supervisor for 26 years until his retirement in 1990. Ralph was an active member of the Iowa Association of Counties from 1964 - 1990 and was president from 1977 - 1978. Ralph was also active with the N.W. IA Mental Health Center and was on the Board of Director's for N.W. IA Alcoholism & Drug Treatment Unit from 1974-1990. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Shrine and the Lion's Club. He loved to travel, golf, do woodworking, play bridge and was an avid sports enthusiast. Ralph enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona with his new friends and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Ralph passed away at the Morningside Rehabilitation and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa, on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn, on December 28, 2001; a daughter, Sherry; a grandson, Brian and four brothers: Donald, Wayne, Chub and Charles, who passed away in infancy. Ralph is survived by his son, Ed and daughter-in-law, Janice, of Ida Grove, IA; two grandchildren: Joel and his fianc�, Laura Elliott of Council Bluffs, IA and Sherry and her friend, Donnie Grimes of Ida Grove, IA; one great- granddaughter, Jasmine; other relatives and many friends.
