Ralph Henry Jalas, the son of Rudolph and Margaret (Nissen) Jalas, was born on December 16, 1918 on a farm in O'Brien County. He was raised in the Sutherland area where he attended school. After school Ralph helped his parents on the family farm.
Ralph married Marian Fife on December 19, 1939 in Sioux City, IA. Following their marriage, he farmed his parents farm until 1960. He then went to work for Baumgarten Funeral Home for 19 years, retiring in 1979. In 1946, Ralph joined the Civil Air Patrol until 1956. Ralph was a member of the Abiff Lodge #347 in Sutherland. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing in Canada, Minnesota and Lake Okoboji and flying his 140 Cessna airplane.
Ralph passed away on January 1, 2008 at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marian on December 28, 1987; his sister, Velma Wohlert and longtime friend, Opal Gulliford.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jerry Jalas and his wife, Caroline of Sarasota, FL; his daughter, Linda Rickert and her husband, Mike of Reinbeck, IA; five grandchildren: Jennifer Hanley, Jessica Curtis, Jeanice Blizzard, Craig Rickert and Kristen Rickert; four great-grandchildren: James Curtis, Jaclyn Curtis, Jason Blizzard and Taylor Rickert; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 4, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland.
