Raymond Farquhar

Raymond Leroy Farquhar, the son of James and Eva (McElwain) Farquhar, was born July 18, 1916, on the family farm in rural Sutherland, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland where he attended country schools and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1934. Following graduation Raymond helped area farmers and worked at the Sutherland Creamery from 1939-1940. In November of 1941, Ray entered the Navy and served our country. On October 20, 1943, Ray was united in marriage to Ella Gunnerson, in Sioux City, Iowa. He continued his military service until his honorable discharge in 1945. Ray and his wife Ella lived in California for a short time before moving back to Sutherland where he farmed with his brothers for 33 years. In his free time Ray enjoyed playing cribbage, euchre, and solitaire. He also enjoyed going to coffee with his friends, driving through the country, and helping with the combine. Most of all Raymond enjoyed being around his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On March 8, 2007, Raymond passed away at the Longhouse Residence at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ella; sister, Lois Leary and husband Joe; three brothers: Wayne Farquhar and wife Marge, Myrl Farquhar, and Bernard Farquhar and wife Katherine. Left to cherish his memory are two sons: James Farquhar of Boca Rattan, FL, Don (Linda) Farquhar, of Sutherland, IA; seven grandchildren: Douglas Farquhar of Lake Wales, FL, Theresa Farquhar and special friend Christopher Abbott, of Jupiter, FL, Leanna Farquhar of Boca Ratton, FL, Heather (Kirk) Struve of Granville, IA, Ryan (Heidi) Farquhar, of Sutherland, IA, Ross Farquhar and special friend Jenn Twedt of Ames, IA, Lee Farquhar, of Iowa City, IA; six great-grandchildren: Brett, Damon, Sydney, and Parker Struve, and Jack and Payton Farquhar; three sisters in law: Cleone Farquhar, Esther Gunnerson, and Lucile Gunnerson, all of Spencer, IA; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
