Raymond Lester Johannsen

Raymond Lester Johannsen, the son of Herman and Ella Lahann Johannsen, was born September 4, 1913 on the family farm two miles north of Sutherland, Iowa. Raymond attended Grant #8 rural school and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1930. After graduation, he began farming and in 1936, along with his brother, Delbert, was an owner-operator of a custom farming business that covered O'Brien, Clay, Buena Vista and Cherokee counties. He continued in that business until 1943. Raymond entered the military on May 7, 1943. After stateside service, Raymond spent time in the Hawaiian, Marshall and Mariana Islands. He was awarded the Battle Star for the invasion of the Island of Guam. He was honorably discharged from the Army on January 21, 1946. Upon returning to Sutherland, he resumed farming and continued until he retired in 1981. On February 27, 1954, Raymond married Wynona Jennings at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland. He was a resident in the town of Sutherland since 1954. He was a member of the American Legion since 1946, was presented a 50 year member certificate of the Masonic Lodge in March of 1992, was a charter member and served 5 years with the Sutherland Economic Development Board, and was a board member of the General N.B. Baker Library Board in Sutherland since 1976. Raymond passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the age of 99. His parents, a son, Gary and a brother, Delbert, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wynona of Sutherland; one daughter, Judy Snyder and her husband, Gene of Roseville, CA; one son, Jerry Jennings and his wife, Jan of Warrens, WI; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one nephew, Edward Johannsen of Sutherland; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 20, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Military services will be conducted by American Legion Post #152 of Sutherland, Iowa following the committal services.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 P.M., Sunday with the family present from 4 to 6:00 P.M., Sunday at the Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland.
