Rex Conrad Martin, the son of Andrew Clyde and Ida Jane (Sitz) Martin, was born September 6, 1921 in Sutherland, IA. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland where he received his education. At the age of 17, he and his brother, Joe, went to Washington State to work picking apples and he later returned to Sutherland to farm. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WW II in France from December 1942, until his honorable discharge as 1st Sergeant in October 1945. He received a Purple Heart for his wounds he received while battling on the front lines.
Rex married Muriel Moore on November 14, 1949, in Sutherland, IA. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm north of Sutherland in 1950, where they continued farming. Due to a back injury, Rex stopped farming and they moved to town in 1963, where he worked as the manager of the Sutherland Elevator until 1965. He later worked for the U.S. Government as a rural mail carrier in Sutherland and Larrabee from 1965 until his retirement in 1990. He built the Sutherland Car Wash in 1970 and owned and managed it for many years. Rex was the chairman for the Legion community building built in 1949. In 1983, Rex was the general chairman of the Sutherland Bicentennial Committee. Rex had many interests and provided many contributions. He made sure an American flag always flew at his home and the Covey Church. He delivered Meals on Wheels and took those who needed rides to doctor appointments. He enjoyed golfing, boating, camping, fishing, shooting pool and music. He enjoyed playing the accordion for family and friends. Rex was a very - kind, funny, loyal, hardworking and a hero. Rex and Muriel would have been married 61 years in November.
Rex passed away at his daughter's home in Omaha on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jolene; and brothers and sisters: Lila, Cleora, Beulah, Bonnie, Scottie and Joe.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Muriel ; one son, Jim and wife, Sue; two daughters: Judy Katskee and husband, Mitch, and Jani Martin; grandchildren: Mandy Smock and husband, Pete, Joi, Jimmy, Marty and Maggie Katskee; great-grandchildren: Claire and Jack Smock, all from Omaha, NE; and many other relatives & friends.
SERVICES
Graveside services will be held 1:00 P.M., Monday, September 20, 2010 at Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland.
Military services will be conducted by Dean-Underwood Post #10 of Peterson, Iowa following the graveside services.
