Rex Sunday Travis, the son of Roy and Beatrice Lucille (Sunday) Travis, was born November 5, 1919 in Manson, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Pocahontas, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Pocahontas High School. After his schooling, he enlisted in the military and served in the Army in Ghana, where he helped install their first telephone system. He served during WWII from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Following his discharge, he worked for Gambles stores in Spencer, Sheldon, Boone and Creston, Iowa.
Rex married Roberta Smith on August 29, 1946 in Ayrshire, IA. In 1955, he started farming north of Webb, where they remained until his retirement in the 1980’s. Their leisure time was spent with family enjoying fishing, boating and swimming at Lost Island Lake where they eventually retired to a vacation home. Rex is a longtime member of the Ruthven American Legion where he became the official egg cooker at their pancake breakfasts. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing pool. In 1970’s they started going to Mesa, AZ during the winter.
He passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the age of 98. Rex was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bobbie in 2015; four brothers: George, Robert, Carroll (Ted) and James; three sisters: Mary Leslein, Ruth Scott and Patricia Buettner.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Priscilla (Tim) Brehm of Bell Canyon, CA, Nancy Ouellette of Spencer, IA and David Travis of Apache Junction, AZ; three grandchildren: Christina (Matt) Pierce of Spencer, Roberta Brehm and Travis Brehm both of Bell Canyon, CA; three great grandchildren: Aria, Makenna and Tanner; other relatives and friends.
