Richard Dean Edleman, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the age of 87.
Richard was born in Webb Iowa on October 8, 1931 to George Keith and Gertrude Catherine (Brown) Edleman. The family later moved to a farm west of Spencer, where Richard attended country school. In 1940 the family returned to the Webb area where he attended school and was a member of both the basketball and baseball teams. Farming and raising Hereford Cattle were always at the forefront of Richard’s life. He showed the Champion Steer at the 1947 Clay County Fair and later, he and his father had a successful livestock breeding operation.
He attended Iowa State University where he was a member of the Livestock and Meats judging teams. Upon graduation in 1956, he taught Vocational Agriculture at Webb High School for three years and then continued to teach at Webb and Correctionville for 17 years while continuing to farm. Richard also obtained his RN degree during this time.
Richard had a passion for western landscapes and wildflowers, often planting them on his farm. He enjoyed reading about history and natural sciences.
On July 24, 1965 he and Frances Carr were united in marriage at the Cathedral in Sioux City. Together they had four children: Valerie of Mission, KS, Martin (Kristi) of Cambridge, IA, Paul of Rock Falls, IL and Theresa (John) Spadafora of York, PA; four grandchildren: Dana and Carla Edleman and Nicholas and Maggie Spadafora.
His children and grandchildren were the light of his life and brought him great joy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
