Spencer

Richard G. Harris, the son of Leon and Viola (Twigg) Harris, was born May 16, 1929 in Rolfe, IA.  His early childhood years were spent in Rolfe until his family moved to Everly, IA in 1935.  In Everly, he attended a country grade school. He went on to graduate from Everly High School in 1947. He continued his education at Iowa State University, where he received his BA degree in Vocational Agriculture in 1951.

Richard married Gloria Mohr on December 28, 1949 in Hartley, IA.  After his graduation from college, Richard taught school in Odebolt, IA for two years, until leaving the classroom to begin his career in farming.  After farming for a time near Everly and May City, he settled on the family farm north of Everly in 1963.  He continued farming there until his retirement in 2014 after 63 years of farming.  His family was very important to him and he planned his work day around his children’s activities.  He was also a devoted husband.  Richard was very involved in his community. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Everly, served on the Everly School Board for 12 years (including 4 years as president), was on the ASCS and FSA Boards, belonged to the Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader for many years.  He loved being around the Clay County Fair, working the barns and taking tickets at the gate.

Richard passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the age of 88.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Marjorie Harris and Ardyth Peterson and a great grandson, Xavier Harris.
