Richard Horswell Hansen, the son of Henry Hans and Floy (Horswell) Hansen, was born on April 8, 1914, in Estherville, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Estherville, where he received his early education and graduated from Estherville High School. Richard started working as a farm hand and eventually went into a partnership with his brother.
On September 4, 1940, Richard married Margaret Mae Frahm in Onawa, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm northwest of Estherville, which was first owned by his grandparents. In 1945 he and his brother, Robert bought a farm southwest of Estherville and the families moved there. After the breaking up of the partnership in 1947, Richard and Margaret moved to a farm southwest of Estherville. In 1968, they moved to a farm west of Fostoria, and eventually moving to Spencer in 1987.
Richard was a member of the First Reformed Church in Everly, an active member of the Farm Bureau, he was also on the Wallingford Coop Elevator Board and a past member of the Ostomy Association. Richard also enjoyed working in his garden.
Richard passed away on November 21, 2006, at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret and his three brothers: Donald, James and Robert and one sister, Lois Wiegand.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mary Beth Bishop and her husband, Wayne of Everly, IA; one son, David Richard Hansen of Estherville, IA; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer with Pastor David Loveall officiating. Burial will take place at the First Reformed Cemetery in rural Everly, Iowa.
