Robert Bryson 'Bob' Gould, son of George Byron Gould and Mary Elder was born February 18, 1922 on a farm east of Spencer, and then moved to the family farm north of Spencer in 1936. Bob earned his early education from country school and then went on to Spencer High School where he broke the 100-yard dash record and held it for 40 years, and was a half back for the football team. He graduated in 1941. After school, he started farming on the family farm and played semi-professional football in Sutherland, Iowa. In 1945, he entered the U.S. Navy and served for two years.
On October 23, 1948, Bob married Arla Ann Jones in Jackson, Minnesota. They spent their life together on the family farm north of Spencer. Bob was a member of the Langdon Methodist Church and the American Legion Glenn Pederson Post #1, and a former member of the Clay County Cattlemen's Association and Clay County Pork Producers. He served as a board member for Clay County Mutual Insurance and the Clay County Fair.
His favorite activities included spending time with family and friends and supporting Spencer High School sports and activities, especially when his grandchildren were participating.
Bob passed away on May 18, 2015 at the Spencer Hospital; he was 93. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: George Gould and Art Gould, his sister and brother-in-law: Margaret and Lester Zinn, his brothers-in-law, Bernard Jones and Wendell Jones; his son, David Gould, and his daughter-in-law, Becky Swanson-Gould.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Arla Gould, of Spencer, his children, Deb Leake and Becky Gould both of Spencer, Rita (Tim) Smith of Webb, Bob D. (Kaelynn) Gould, and Rich Gould both of Spencer; his 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; his sisters-in-law: Lorraine Gould of Waupun, WI, Betty Kreutzberger of Winamac, IN, and Marilyn Jones of Linn Grove; other relatives, and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
Military services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post #1 - American Legion following the services at the church.
A lunch and time of fellowship will be held immediately following the services at the BenTena Room at Grace United Methodist Church.
