Robert Lee (Bob) Blum

June 3, 1926 — May 25, 2012

Robert Lee (Bob) Blum was born June 3, 1926. His parents were Minor O. Blum and Bertha (Ryon) Blum. Bob attended Terril School, graduating in 1943. He attended Iowa State University, and then spent several years fitting sale cattle for purebred shorthorn breeders in Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa. In 1950, he took a small herd of show cattle from the International Livestock Show in Chicago by railroad boxcar to Napa, California. In 1947, he started custom spraying, owning the first hi-boy sprayer in the area. On January 14, 1951, Bob married Donna Marie Bryngelson, daughter of Elmer and Maggie (Olson) Bryngelson at Linn Grove, IA. They moved to Napa, CA, where they managed a cattle ranch in the Napa Valley. In the spring of 1952, they returned to Terril and started farming. In 1962, Bob and Donna moved to a farm southeast of Terril. They farmed with Bob's parents and showed Polled Shorthorn cattle. Bob was a third generation Polled Shorthorn cattle breeder, starting with H.L. Ryon, Bob's grandfather. They had their own production sales from 1957 until 1975, and also had an annual club calf sale for the past 25 years. Bob was a director on the American Polled Shorthorn Society from 1968 to 1974. Bob was a member of the Terril United Methodist Church, 50-year Mason member, and served on the Dickinson County Fair Board for many years. Bob looked forward to calving season every spring. He also enjoyed going to all his grandchildren's livestock events. Bob's hobbies were hunting and fishing. Bob passed away at his home on Friday, May 25, 2012, at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant grandson, Cody Lee Jackson; four brothers-in-law: Leonard Bryngelson, Virgil Bryngelson, Leonard Callawaert, Dwight Clapp; and four sisters-in-law: Ann Blum, Dorothy Bryngelson, Pearl Callawaert and Mary Clapp. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna of Terril, IA; two daughters: Connie and husband, Craig Pavelko of Terril, IA, and Julie and husband, Doug Herum of Estherville, IA; five grandchildren: Cassie (Ryan) Hanson of San Francisco, CA, Clinton Pavelko of Emmetsburg, IA, Tess Jackson and fiance, Clayton Eggers of Graettinger, IA, Hallee Jackson of Terril, IA, Bailey Jackson and fiance Matt Sievers of Newell, IA; two step-grandchildren: Allison (Brad) Nelson, and Bryan Herum; one brother, Richard (Sandra) Blum of Gainesville, FL; two sisters: Julia (Carl) Storey of Homewood, IL, and Mary (Martin) Baedke of Cedar Falls, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
