Robert LeRoy STOEBER was born in Sioux City, IA. October 19, 1925, to Albert and Elizabeth (Heuertz) Stoeber. Shortly after his birth, he moved with his family to LeMars, IA, living at 24 6th Av SE, (3 doors east of the church) where he attended St. Joseph School, graduating in 1943. He volunteered for military service while he was 17 years old because he, 'wanted to serve his country.' Following his 18th birthday in November 1943, he attended 6 weeks of basic training in Wichita Falls, TX. By 1945, he was attending flight school in Waco, TX. Later that year, was assigned to gunnery school in Laredo, TX, where he trained as a gunner on a 20-man crew of a B17 'Flying Fortress'. He was discharged in 1946.
Back when he was in high school, he met Betty Bell Sargent while they both worked at Mount Drug in LeMars, IA. While he was stationed in Waco, TX, he married Betty Bell on February 8, 1945. After his discharge, he returned to LeMars where he worked as a carpenter and a plasterer. In 1957, Bob went to work for Wells Dairy determined to 'deliver good customer service' which he accomplished while Wells Dairy grew to be the largest family owned dairy in America. He served as sales manager and retired in 1988. He was a great communicator and knew everyone!
Bob and Betty moved to Okoboji, IA after he retired and built a home there. After owning several homes at The Iowa Great Lakes, he and Betty moved to St. Luke's Retirement Center in Spencer, IA.
Bob was active in Knights of Columbus in LeMars, IA, where served as Grand Night in 1964 during the construction of the current Knights of Columbus Hall. After that, he became District Deputy and was an active member of the 'Fourth Degree' in Knights of Columbus.
Bob was a builder and an excellent craftsman. He worked in his wood shop much like his father did when he was growing up. He took enormous pride in doing a job well!! Countless picture frames still cover the walls of children and grandchildren. Home improvement projects for friends and family still add comfort to those for whom they were intended.
Bob passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Bell; sisters, Lorraine Steele, Helen Sullivan, and Margaret Schumacher; along with one grandson, Greg Nieman, and son-in-laws Robert Baxter and Everett Allison.
