Robert Lewis Krile

Bob Krile was born September 18, 1924 to Walter Krile and Thelma Slay in Truax, IA where his dad worked on the Railroad building bridges.  Bob was the oldest of three sons.  The family then moved to Parkersburg, IA where the boys attended school and graduated.  Bob was active in music, sports and a drum and bugle corp.  The family attended the Baptist Church and Bob gave his life to Christ at age ten.

     Following high school, Bob attended a machinist school and was employed at the Rock Island  Arsenal.  He joined the Navy in WWII and served on a Destroyer Escort in the South Pacific where they were involved in several invasions.  After the war, he began working at the Spencer Post Office as a clerk.  Being in the Reserves, he was recalled during the Korean Conflict to a transport ship carrying troops.  Returning to Spencer, he and his brothers formed a Barbershop Quartet called The Four Nubbins.  They performed for the Spencer Chorus and also traveled to other states.

     Bob met Sharon Hynes, a teacher in the Primghar School system and they were married in 1956 and she moved to teach and join him in Spencer.  Bob enjoyed Big Band music and also Dixie Land tunes.  He and Sharon would go to Davenport and sit by the Mississippi to listen to groups play music of Bix Beiderbecke.  Bob and his dad and son Randy would help elderly citizens remove storm windows and install screens in the spring and reverse the procedure in the fall.  After retiring he worked in the warehouse at Spencer Grocer and he was co-owner of a candy vending machine business where he maintained and filled the machines.  If we were invited to go along, we were discouraged from sampling the candy as it would change the inventory.  At family dinners, he would pray and then raise his arm and say, “Right on Brother” and then we could eat.

     Bob was able to serve on several positions at the First Baptist Church and sang tenor in the church choir for more than 50 years.  He also enjoyed driving vehicles for the Ford Garage and attending Navy reunions.  He was an avid Cubs fan and lived to see them win the World Series.  He was proud of his families’ accomplishments in music and sports.

     He passed to his heavenly home on March 6, 2021 at the Ruthven Care Center surrounded by family.  Bob will be remembered for his faithfulness and sense of humor.  Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Thelma Krile; Parents In Law, Harold and Grace Hynes; brothers: Harold (Betty) Krile and Paul (Shirley) Krile; sister-in-law, Ardiss Pfeifer (Ralph); brother-in-law, Donald McQueen.

     Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 65 years, Sharon; son Randy Krile (Mindy); daughter, Brenda Sassman; grandsons: Joe (Shannon) Krile, Zach Krile, Ben (Ann) Sassman, Jordan (Devius) Sassman; great grandchildren: Ivan Krile, Makenna Sassman, Harper Sassman Emma Sassman, Rori Krile, Jr Collins, Addyson Collins, Kaylee Collins and Jakobe Collins; sister-in-law, Carol McQueen; extended family, neighbors and friends.
