Robert Wayne Steele, the son of Silas and Della (Borland) Steele was born December 28, 1918, on the family farm. His childhood years were spent in the Sutherland area where he attended school, graduating in 1936.
Robert married Maxine Gieser on August 17, 1940, in Hartley, IA. He worked on the family farm his whole life. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, and bowling. He also sponsored several bowing teams. He was active in 4-H, Ruritan Club, and Sunday School, where he volunteered as a teacher and superintendent. He was proud to have his farm designated an Iowa Conservation Farm. He was also a loyal employee of Group 21 for 20 years, spending many extra hours to make sure the cows had food and water. During one blizzard in the late 1970's he walked 4miles, cross country, over and through snowbanks, to feed and water the cattle. When asked afterward why he did it, he said "Because no one else would." That just about summed up his life philosophy.
Robert passed away on January 25, 2015, at Hartley Community Memorial Health in Hartley, IA, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Silas and Harold Steele; two sisters, Ruth Gillespie and Della Kruckenberg.
Left to cherish his memory are his 6 children: Lester of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, Larry (Elaine) Steele of Spirit Lake, IA, Kathleen (Bill) Eggers of Winterset, IA, Judy (Jim) Lestina of Andover, MN, Brian Steele of Lubbock, TX, and Lori (Deen) Hubin of Minneapolis, MN; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Phyllis Steele of South Dakota and Doris Steele of Sutherland, IA; other relatives and many friends.
