Roger Charles Hill

Roger Charles Hill, the son of Harry and Emma (Kaiser) Hill was born August 16, 1930, in Sutherland, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Sutherland area where he attended school, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1948. With a quest for adventure and his best friend, Sam, Roger headed west in search of fame and possible fortune. Roger would later regale his family with his many escapades as a miner in California and a radioman in the Navy. The heart wants what the heart wants and Roger returned to Sutherland to marry the love of his life, Cleo in 1956. Many happy years followed as did three children: Suzanne, Penny and Scott. Roger owned a Phillips 66 station in Primghar and co-owned H&J Service in Calumet. Roger's highlight in his career came when he started Steamway Carpet Cleaners, an endeavor that he felt was more akin to fun than drudgery. Both family members and friends who worked with Roger will always recall the joyful memories that only someone of Roger's effusive nature could conceive. His legacy was a love of life, family, friends and church. His stories left you entertained but with a bit of speculation. He considered himself an amateur meteorologist, a lawn-care specialist, a protector of small creatures and the purveyor of the vice grip handshake. Roger passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016, at Hawkeye Care Center in Spirit Lake, IA at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merton and Ned Hill; and two sisters, Patricia and Florence Brown. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cleo of Spirit Lake, IA; three children: Suzanne and Michael Goodman of Ventura, CA, Penny and Joel Moellers of North Liberty, IA and Scott and Kathi Hill of Spirit Lake, IA; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Harriet Johannsen of Spencer, IA and Carolyn Martin of Cedar Rapids, IA; one brother, Richard Hill of Robins, IA; other relatives; and many friends.
