Roger Dean Crew, the son of Eldon and Ilene (Jones) Crew was born June 29, 1938 in rural Webb, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Gillett Grove, IA area where he attended school, and graduated from Gillett Grove High School in 1956.
Roger served in the National Guard until his Honorable Discharge. He married Elaine Root on November 30, 1958 in Whittier, CA. They moved to the Gillett Grove area and farmed before moving to Spencer, IA in 1962. He then co-owned and operated the Town and Country Drive-In for 10 years, worked for Prudential Insurance, and was an Owner-Operator of his own rig for several years for Midwest Coast Transport. He flew charter flights for Spencer Flying Service at Spencer Municipal Airport. He began working for the United States Postal Service and retired in 2008 after 30 1/2 years.
Roger's joy was flying airplanes, and was proud to have earned every different license to fly one. He also enjoyed landscaping, spending time on his sailboat, helping people and especially spending time with family. He was a member of DaySpring Church in Spencer.
Roger passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Sandra Oliphant.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Elaine of Spencer, IA; 3 children, Valerie (Bill) Tulip of Spencer, IA, Kellie Burns of Spencer, IA, and Steven (Jennifer) Crew of Lawton, IA; 6 grandchildren, Alex (Amy) Tulip of Minneapolis, MN, Ben (Crystal) Tulip of Panama City, FL, Leslie (Tim) Falkenberg of Los Angeles, CA, Harry, Jack, and Olivia Crew; other relatives, and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Roger's name.
SERVICES
Funeral services will take place 1:30 P.M., Saturday, January 14, at Day Spring Assembly of God Church in Spencer.
