Roger Glau was born May 13, 1945, in Schleswig, IA to Edwin and Marcella Glau. He and his sister, Barbara, grew up on the family farm in Schleswig before his family relocated to Mapleton, IA. Roger made the move to Spencer, IA as a young adult and began working for clothing retailer, Eddie Quinn. It wasn’t long after he found his true calling combining his Iowa farm roots and retail experience to run The Buggy Whip Western Store. Roger spent over 40 years as owner of The Buggy Whip that included multiple decades at the Clay County Fair. Upon retiring on May 7, 2013, he enjoyed active, part time work at Laser Car Wash.
Roger was loved by many for his infectious smile, kind words, and gentle (yet sarcastic) sense of humor. He possessed the ability carry on a conversation with anyone. If he wasn’t tinkering in the garage, you could find Roger playing games or surfing the web. He enjoyed country music concerts, a fresh haircut, leather and shoe repair, and getting Saturday morning coffee and breakfast with the boys.
Roger passed away peacefully during the early hours of Friday, February 28th at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home. Roger was a staple in the community and will be dearly missed by many.
