Russell Wayne Hughes, the son of Owen and Marie (Libby) Hughes was born December 29, 1926 at home near Peterson, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Peterson area, where he attended school and graduated from Rembrandt High School in 1945. After graduation, Russell served in the U.S. Army until his Honorable Discharge.
Russell married Darline Johnson on April 19, 1948 in Albert City, IA. They lived and farmed in Albert City until moving to Everly, IA in 1959 where he drove truck for Standard Oil. In 1965, Russell started worked as a mechanic for Harms Implement until his retirement in 1991.
Russell enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing, reading, camping, bowling, playing baseball and camping at Cutty's. He and Darline also enjoyed traveling, making it to all 50 states and Europe twice. Russell was a member of the Commercial Club, Lion's Club, American Legion, and United Methodist Church in Everly, where he served as a board member.
Russell passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clifford and one sister, Shirley Wolfe.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Darline of Everly, IA; 2 daughters, Cynthia (Rocky) O'Hara of Spencer, IA and Patricia Campbell of Arnolds Park, IA; 5 grandchildren, Michelle O'Hara, Brent (Renee) O'Hara, Cory (Nichole) Campbell, Travis (Stacy) Campbell and Ashley (Andrew) Torchio; 5 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); one sister, Darlene Wise of Linn Grove, IA; other relatives; and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will take place 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 26, at United Methodist Church in Everly.
