Ruth May Hansen, the daughter of John and Lillie (Ostrom) Lorenz was born May 11, 1917 in Spencer, IA. Her parents moved to a farm near Dickens, IA, where she attended the Sioux Township rural school near her home. Ruth graduated from Dickens high school, and worked a year in Carters Grocery Store in Dickens. She attended summer school at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, then taught at the rural school near her home.
Ruth married Leonard Hansen of rural Dickens, August 28, 1937 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They rented a farm near Dickens and later purchased it and lived there 55 years.
Ruth was a member of the Freeman Township Club, Birthday Club, First Congregational Church and was a leader of the Freeman Girls 4-H Club. Ruth enjoyed antiques, baking, and helping babysit the grandkids. Ruth and Leonard enjoyed playing cards with a neighborhood couples group. She also loved visiting and having coffee with her brothers and sister, always talking antiques.
Leonard and Ruth quit farming and moved to the Spirit Lake area and later back to Spencer in their retirement years.
Ruth passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Hartley Community Memorial Health at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Leonard; parents; an infant son; brothers, Ted, Lee, George and Jim; and her sister Mary.
Left to cherish her memory is one daughter Linda and her husband Robert Strouse of Spirit Lake, two granddaughters, Heather and her husband Connor Deering of Waukee, IA; and Janey and her husband Jim McGorman of Tarzana, CA; two great granddaughters, Delaney Deering and Sydney McGorman and one great grandson Grady Deering; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services will be held at 9:30 A.M., Friday, July 21, 2017 at North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Spencer.
