Roswell 'Sam' Samuel McCormack, was born May 21, 1930 in Sutherland, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland, where he received his education at country schools in Waterman Township in O'Brien County. He continued his education at Sutherland High School, graduating in 1948. After his schooling, he spent the summer in California before he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from November of 1951 until his honorable discharge in October of 1953. While in the military he was awarded the Korean Service Medal along with 3 Bronze Service Stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Sam married Ardyce Cooper on November 14, 1954 in Hawarden, IA. After their marriage, they lived in Sutherland, IA, where he farmed and worked construction for 25 years. His last working years were spent serving as a rural letter carrier until his retirement in 2003. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Sam was also active with the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, bowling league and fishing.
He passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Monday, January 30, 2017 at the age of 86. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Patricia; his brothers: Francis and Kenneth McCormack and sisters Marjorie Schulke, Connie Tomich and Colleen Rienfeld; and grandson Paul Stanzel.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ardyce of Sutherland; one daughter, Lynnette Graesing and her husband, Denny of Linn Grove; one son, Brian McCormack and his wife, Tracy Lamson Kim of Dallas, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters: Marilyn Bishop of Huntington, PA and Sharon Webb of Knoxville, TN; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, February 3, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland.
A lunch and time of fellowship will be held immediately following the memorial services at the church.
