Shawn Lee Smith

     Shawn Lee Smith, the son of Dennis “Patrick” and Nancy (Mengelsen) Smith, was born May 30, 1967 in Spencer, Iowa.  His childhood years were spent in Fostoria, where he received his education, graduating from Milford High School. After his schooling, he learned the welding trade from his father and worked with him at Fostoria Welding.  Shawn also worked at Rich’s Café and at the North Y Truck Stop.

     Shawn married Mary Ann Grover on July 13, 1991 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.  After their marriage, he continued to work at the truck stop and later Maurer Manufacturing in Spencer, where he was currently a welding supervisor.  He served on the Fostoria Fire Department after high school and also served on the Fostoria City Council.  Shawn was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and camping.  He enjoyed all the times he spent with his sons, helping them fix cars, dirt bikes and lighting fireworks.  He also enjoyed cutting trees and splitting wood.

     He passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the age of 50.  Shawn was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal and paternal grandparents and a sister in infancy.

     Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Ann of Fostoria; two sons: Austen Smith and his friend, Kristina Cross and Logan Smith all of Hartley; several other relatives and many friends.
