Shirley Ann Hamrick was born on Feb. 3, 1930, in Sioux Rapids, IA to Aron and Clara (Johnson) Barstad. She grew up on the family farm, was confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, and graduated from Cornell High School. She loved to sing and was involved in many school and church activities.
She married Arden (Denny) Hamrick on June 12, 1947. They lived in California before returning to Iowa and making their home in Webb in 1951. Denny was in the general construction business until his death in 1992. She was a great mom to their 6 children, and a wonderful grandma and great grandma. She was warm and loving, patient and kind, encouraging and fun.
Shirley could do so many things, and over the years she made blue jeans for Aalfs Manufacturing, cooked and drove a school bus for South Clay Schools, painted and hung wallpaper. A book lover, she worked for the Webb Library and read 100 books a year. Generous with her time and talents, she held many roles at Webb United Methodist Church, and volunteered in her community, for the Clay County Immunization Clinic and for Hospice. She always had time for coffee with her many friends.
She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her herself, her children and grandchildren, fancy doll clothes for a dollmaker, and created beautiful quilts. Shirley and Denny collected stoneware, and spent many happy days going to auctions, antique shops and stoneware conventions. She was always ready for new adventures and enjoyed traveling in the USA and around the world with her family. She had a sunny personality, a quick smile, a great laugh, and was always welcoming.
Shirley passed away at St. Lukes Lutheran Home in Spencer on August 30, 2021, at age 91. She is survived by her children: Teresa Robertson, Webb; Janet (Tom) Hansen, Webb; Joan (Peter) Riley, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mark (Mona) Hamrick, St. Cloud, MN; Craig (Cindy) Hamrick, Le Mars, IA; and Tony (Jill) Hamrick, Grand Junction, CO; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren who all adored her; sister-in-law, Marlene Hamrick; nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Aron and Clara Barstad; parents-in-law, Howard and Ruth Hamrick; husband, Denny; son-in-law, Ben Robertson; brother, Arnold Barstad; sister, Lois Hanson; and brother-in-law, Jack Hamrick.
