Shirley Ann Ludwig

November 20, 1934 — December 7, 2014

Shirley Ann Bishop was born on November 20, 1934 in Bryan, Ohio to Leona and Kermit Bishop. She grew up with her sister Delores in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After Shirley attending Iowa State College and receiving her degree in home economics applied arts, she married Dick Ludwig in September 1956. Together they spent nearly 40 years farming south of Laurens, Iowa. All three of their girls, Sandi, Julie and Susan, were raised in Laurens. Shirley loved playing bridge, staying active in local women's groups and volunteering at her local church. Following Dick's death in 1997, she lived for nearly 15 years in Spencer. Shirley was an active grandmother, loving to spend time with her grandchildren playing dress-up, having tea, taking trips to interesting places and attending their many activities. At Thanksgiving 2014, Shirley celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by her family and many friends. She passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2014 in Spencer, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dick. Shirley is survived by her sister, Delores Hoisington of Denver, CO. Three daughters celebrate her life: Sandra Thompson of Woodside, CA; Julie Christensen of Royal, IA and Susan Szmyrgala of Coralville, IA. The joys of her life were her seven grandchildren: Jennifer Christensen Hosch, Anne Christensen Soto, Lee Christensen Pierce, Wesley Christensen, Emilia Szmyrgala, Daniel Szmyrgala and Caity Prather. Shirley's most recent blessings were her two great-grandsons, Sam and Luke Hosch.
