Shirley Evon Smith, the daughter of Charles L. and Elsie L. Plinske DeWeese, was born September 14, 1936 in Salix, Iowa. Her early years, were spent on the farm in Salix, where she received her early education. Later, she moved to Whiting, Iowa with her sister, Marj, and brother-in-law, Raymond Daniels for one year. She then moved to Spencer to live with her sister, Vernice, and brother-in-law, Ray Feldhacker where she met Tom. One year later, she moved back to Sioux City, IA and attended East High to finish her education.
Shirley married Thomas Smith on June 1, 1954 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Spencer where they raised their family. She also owned and operated Sno-cones and Popcorn by Shirley at the Clay County Fair for 25 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Spencer and helped babysitting in church for 14 years. Most of all, Shirley enjoyed her family and their activities together such as camping and fishing. She also loved shooting squirrels out of her bird feeders.
Shirley passed away on December 7, 2008 at her home near Spencer at the age of 72.. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Elsie Hubert, Marj Daniels, Doris DeWeese, an infant brother, Glennon, her husband, Tom on April 22, 2001, and a grandson, Jered Edward Shields-Smith on June 17, 2005.
Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses: Becky and Dale Woolery of Spencer, Brenda and Terry Griffin of Spencer, Brent and Jacie Smith of Grimes, IA, Betina "Missy" and Matthew Lair of Spencer and Bradley and Amy Smith of Spencer; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Vernice Feldhacker of Spencer, IA, 2 brothers, Gene DeWeese of Nisland, SD, and Billie DeWeese of Arvada, CO, other relatives and many friends.

Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Spencer.
