Shirley Jean Whitworth

Shirley Jean Whitworth, the daughter of Theodore R. and Nola (Lovely) Speed, was born October 16, 1929 in Greenfield, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Calumet, where she attended grade school and later Rippey & then Greenfield, where her family moved. She graduated from Greenfield High School and later Drake University. Shirley married George Whitworth on May 25, 1952 in Greenfield, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of Griswold and Clarion, before moving to Spencer in 1967. While in Spencer, Shirley taught elementary school for 35 years, until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Shirley was also active with the AAUW, the Clef Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and was a choir member at the church. She also enjoyed traveling, reading and walking her dog, KoKo. Shirley passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on May 11, 1991 and one brother, Dallas. Left to cherish her memory are two sisters: Beverly Speed of Spencer, Iowa and Margery Raymond of Pinkney, MI; 2 nieces 2 nephews; many relatives and close friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

VISITATION
Public Visitation will be held from 5 to 9:00 P.M. Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. The family will not be present during the visitation but will greet friends at the Methodist Church following the graveside services.

PRIVATE FAMILY GRAVESIDE SERVICES: Riverside Cemetery Spencer, Iowa The family will greet friends at the Ben Tena Room at Grace United Methodist Church after the private graveside services.
