Shirley Mae Smith, the daughter of Roger and Edith (Gurney) Richards, was born on February 3, 1929, in Yankton, SD. She moved to Spencer at a young age, where she received most of her education and then returned to Yankton to finish and graduate from high school.
Shirley married William Smith shortly after high school on December 31, 1947, in Arnolds Park, IA. Following their marriage, the couple lived in several places such as California, Germany, North Carolina, Texas and Taiwan due to William's military service. While in California, she worked as an executive secretary for the Department of Transportation, but mostly was a homemaker and raised her daughter, Tracy.
Shirley liked to crochet, needlepoint and read. She also loved to help other people by taking them to doctor's appointments, shopping or just volunteering her time at the nursing homes visiting with the residents.
On October 25, 2008, she passed away at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Tracy Munoz and her husband, Tim of Minneapolis, MN; her niece and best friend, Estelle Handy and her husband, Junior of Spencer, IA; her sisters: Norma Grenvik and her husband, John of Wahpeton, ND, Donna Bramley and her husband, Ron of Mason City, IA and Gary Bilton and her husband, Robert of Lake City, FL; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:00a.m., Friday, October 31, 2008, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
