Shirley Mae Steffen, the daughter of Frank and Hilda (Matthiesen) Jessen, was born on March 3, 1925, in Hartley, Iowa. She was raised and received her early education in Everly graduating from Everly High School. After graduation, she worked at the Post Office for a short time.
Shirley married Kenneth Steffen on February 5, 1944, in Royal, Iowa. Following their marriage they farmed in the Greenville area for about 3 years. In 1946, they relocated north of Everly where they farmed until 1979, then moved into Everly. Shirley was a homemaker, she liked to sew and enjoyed gardening and helping on the farm. She was very involved in the community, volunteering her time and was very instrumental in renovating the country school. Shirley was very motivated and always ready to help anybody in need. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Everly.
On October 31, 2008, Shirley passed away at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Polly Ann Teeple; her brother, Donal (Jim) Jessen and nephew, Keith Jessen.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sherrie Burns and her husband, Lee of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren: Grant Burns and his wife, April, Allison Johnson and her husband, Tim, and Logan Burns and his wife, April; four great-grandchildren: Madison, Garrett and Austin Johnson and Owen Burns; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30a.m., Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Everly.
