Stanley W. Hillmer

August 31, 1931 — July 25, 2016

Stanley William Hillmer, age 84, died on July 25, 2016 in Ruthven, IA. Stan was born in Mallard, IA on August 31, 1931. The fifth of six children, Stan spent his childhood in Mallard, eventually graduating from high school there. Stan served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1955. Returning to Iowa following his military service, he married his wife Ann on June 30, 1957, in Mallard. Stan continued his education at American Tech Radio & TV in Des Moines. The couple lived briefly in Spencer, then moved first to Estherville, then Storm Lake before settling back in Spencer for good in 1961. Stan worked as a technician in the central office of Northwestern Bell/U.S. West for 37 years. Stan and Ann lived in their home at 918 E. 12th St. for almost 55 years until September of 2014 when they moved into Riverview Terrace in Spencer. There they enjoyed numerous social activities, including playing in the bell choir. (Stan took Ann's place after her death.) Stan was a skilled 'fix it' man and enjoyed working on many projects for family and friends throughout his life. He was also an active member of First English Lutheran Church and spent countless hours volunteering, singing in the church choir, and serving on the board of finance. He was an avid photographer and baseball Cardinals fan, and for years was known for the lime green Chevy Vega he tirelessly maintained. He is preceded in death by his parents, three siblings, a granddaughter, and his wife Ann. He is survived by two brothers, three children, and two granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to First English Lutheran Church Pre-School in Spencer or Camp Okoboji (LCMS) in Milford.
