Steven Gustave Dewitz, 66, died Saturday October 30 at his home in Spencer, after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma, surrounded by family.
He was born October 11, 1955 in the town of Eau Claire, WI, to Gus and Hazel Dewitz. He graduated from North High School, West Union, IA, in 1973. Steve was employed at Schwan’s Sales in West Union from 1973-1978. He was later employed with Merrill Company in Marshalltown, IA, and then transferred to the Spencer Merrill Company and continued to work there for 43 years, until his death.
Steve is survived by his wife Sherry of 48 years, one son Adam (Erin) Dewitz of Cadott, WI and one daughter Heidi (Eric) Chapman of West Union, IA. 8 grandchildren; Liam, Abe, Eli, Reid, Kade, Megan, Addison and Mia. 2 sisters Shelby (Bob) Crandall of Eau Claire,WI, Sandy (Joe) Molumby of Chippewa Falls, WI and 1 brother Roger Dewitz of Chippewa Falls,WI. Also, survived by his mother-in-law Lorna Landas, and her children Sue (Jack) Frey, Patty Youll, Peggy (Tim) Juergens, Julie Kopsa, and Harry (Linda) Landas. And many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend Doug Marske who was his hunting and fishing partner for more than 40 years. He also treasured his annual fishing trips up north with his lifelong friends Lonnie Brekke and Dennis Jellings.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gus and Hazel Dewitz, his father-in-law Howard Landas of Fayette, IA and one nephew and two nieces.
Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the Green Bay Packers, building in his workshop and spending time with his grandchildren. Steve was a very likeable person, who saw the best in everyone and was always willing to lend a hand. He was a good, kind person, who was loved by everyone he met. Steve always enjoyed his lunchtime conversations with the daycare children as their interactions were epic with “Dewey or Teve”.
