Susan Marie Thomsen, the daughter of Bernard and Berma (Olson) Thomsen, was born March 24, 1942 in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer, where she received her early education in Meadow Township Country Schools #8 & #9. Susan later attended and graduated from Spencer High School in 1960. Susan spent a lot of time during high school working in the summer at a Bible Camp at Lake Okoboji. Following high school, she continued her education at Dana College in Blair, NE for 2 years and then Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she received her BA degree in Elementary Education. Susan taught elementary school for a few years in the communities of Guthrie Center and later Storm Lake.
Susan worked for many years copywriting commercials for KICD Radio in Spencer and in sales for a radio station in Peoria, IL. She also managed a group of radio stations in and around the Perry, Iowa area. Following her retirement in 2008, she worked partime at Mary's Gift Ship in the Iowa Great Lakes area. She was a past active member of First English Lutheran Church in Peoria, IL and a current active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, where she served on the church council, altar guild and several other committees. She loved spending time with her siblings as well as her many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Susan passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at her home in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 70. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, David Andrew.
Left to cherish her memory are her siblings: Cindy Heiter, Tim and his wife, LuAnn Thomsen, Joan and Jeff Loring and Julie and Kent Hanson all of Spencer; a foster sister Arlene Christensen and her husband Dr. Dale of Ames. Nieces and nephews, Jeffery and Mindy Heiter, Mike and Gina Heiter, of Spencer; Kristen and Tim Heikens of Lake Park, Michelle Heiter of LA, April and Mike Marx of Council Bluffs, Peter Thomsen of San Diego, Robyn and Shawn McGrath of Omaha, David and Tara Thomsen of Germany, Joshua Loring, Jason Loring and Joseph Loring of the Spencer area, and Chantell and Brian Oudsteyn of Manhatten IL, and Zachary Hanson and Abbey of Newell, seven grandnephews and seven grandnieces and her beloved dog, Barney.

A Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.
